In recent times, there has been an increasing number of voices advocating women’s rights. Issues of rape, education of the girl child and gender equality are top on the list of issues currently having good advocacy levels. Among the advocates are activists, lawyers, medical doctors and now the visual artist, Chika Idu.
A contemporary Nigerian artist, Chika Idu uses his art to bring to the fore social issues affecting certain groups in the Nigerian society especially women and children. Interestingly, this advocacy in Nigeria resonates globally; thus making these issues global in nature. Chika Idu who has global exposure recently concluded an art exhibition which took place at Ashanti in the Gwarimpa area of the ever busy Federal Capital city of Abuja, Nigeria.
The exhibition paraded some of the latest works of the artist. The event featured canvas works, a mixture of acrylic and oil. The highly cerebral artist put on display works which address the educational system in Nigeria, women’s rights and using the imbalances created by gender inequality as the launch pad for discuss. Some of the works on display also carry religious tones.
If you are a lover of Art or advocate of same issues and you could not attend this event or even missed it for some reason, then you surely missed cerebral works which were on display and most importantly, missed the opportunity to take for keeps one or more of the artworks as a constant reminder of these social issues.
